A Hard Lesson to Learn: Please Read [Edit]

Journal Entry: Sat Aug 25, 2007, 4:42 PM
Edit Aug 25th: I would like to apologize to my watchers for the recent bombardment of your deviation Inboxes. Previously I had a number of images stored away from public view, most of which were illustrations and concept art from my vampire novel series.

After recent events, I had tried to get these images back on public display, yet for some reason they were showing as displayed but were not appearing physically in my initial gallery.

So, after a process of elimination I've chosen what I consider to be the best picks out of what I had and have resubmitted (a blatantly obvious bit of information) the older works.

Thank you for your understanding and patience as this problem is dealt with.

* * * * *

In the special interest of all aspiring and current artist/authors who may not know, I'm choosing to share with you a personal lesson in which I've learned that, albeit, has been quite painful in the making not only for me, but those close to me.

To anyone who has thought of, is thinking, or is in the process of writing books under a co-authorship with friends consider this:

*Make certain you can trust your partner fully, without reservations. (if you have a bad feeling about it, don't do it)

*Have a written contract made so that every one knows and understands what portion of writing (ie. characters, scenes, ideas) belong to who before hand.

*Keep in mind that if the friendship sours and you have not followed the first two previous step you risk loosing a lot of hard work to theft from the other party. The Legal system can only do so much, so be sure you have your bases covered to prevent future heart ache.

Sadly this is the hard lesson I had to learn. Though a co-authorship project may sound like a good idea and can be a lot of fun granted those involved work well together, you always hold the risk of being royally screwed over by the other party if you do not take precautions.

This goes without saying as well for character designs. Though it may be a little easier to prove ownership of a drawing, if you do not sign and date your work, you might as well be handing free copies to anyone who would be more than willing to take it as their own.

If, however, you do find yourself in the situation I currently am, you might think you know your friend well. The truth of the matter is that even though you may want to trust that person, it's always a good idea to do your research and know what your options are before hand especially if you plan to publish.

I will thus forth conclude this section of my journal entry with this statement. I do plan on continuing my vampire novel series and I will no longer be posting updates (other than drawings) on characters/story progress until the works are finished. However, I am having to re-write and rethink a number of ideas and concepts due to the circumstances I have explained above. The Canon Character list which was created and posted earlier stands solid.

I understand that names nor concepts, unfortunately, can not be copyrighted but I will state this for those concerned. Any character resembling in design, personality, or namesake that has already been viewed in my gallery here on DA (excluding the work of my writing partner *DarkBlacknoid) is a copy of the original intended concepts.

Thank you.

Evil winswhen good men do nothing...
Wow, I can't imagine how horrible it would be to loose any original design of any sort of artistic work... pretty much why I post nothing on the internet.
Hope everything works out for you in the end, somehow, though.
I myself am coauthoring a novel- I'm sorry it's gone so badly for you.

Yes! Chaos and anarchy and general untidiness!
Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear that something like this happened to you.

...and the butler watched all night.
I hope whatever problems you're having sort out :(
Thank you for the advice, though. I was thinking about writing a children's book and was toying with the idea of getting a friend of mine in on the project. I'll definitely keep this in mind.

That's very interesting! I didn't know you could hide your images from public view...or unhide them as the case may or may not be. Now I have to figure out how. lol

And no worries. I totally don't mind getting my box completely full of your art, even if it is "old" art. ^___^
